A Review of The Megaro, London

London is an incredible city, with so many hotel choices and options. I stayed in the Kings Cross and Bloomsbury area of the capital, and was looking for a nice hotel option. I came across The Megaro, with brilliant access to the railway station and lots of nearby attractions, in a slightly less touristy and less visited part of London.

The Megaro Hotel is located near Kings Cross Station, and is within easy walking distance (30 minutes) of all the major attractions in Kings Cross, Covent Garden and Soho – including the canals and Granary Square, The British Museum, Neal’s Yard, Russell Square and many more. It’s actually a great location for exploring north of the River Thames.

The British Museum

As the hotel is right by the train station, the area directly around it isn’t the most picturesque if you venture up some of the side streets, but the view from the hotel is absolutely gorgeous out across to the old architecture of St Pancras and the newer terminal at Kings Cross.

The accommodation at The Megaro is design focused. It’s billed as a landmark destination which rebels against traditional hotels with its bold designs. Basically – the rooms are colourful and designed with a theme, full of funky things and pictures. I’d never stayed in a hotel like it and on that basis I do think it was definitely unique.

The Entrance to our room

We chose to stay in a Pop Diva suite (I feel I have to qualify this by clarifying that this is not my usual style, and I hope I am far from a Pop Diva….although maybe I am a travel diva), which comprised of a nice living area with sofa, table and TV, a big bathroom with luxurious bath, a nice big bed and a dressing area – all bright red and full of tassels of course. It was actually really fun and there was no beige in sight.

The hotel has a restaurant called Magenta which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We only ate in there for breakfast and the food was very nice. Again the restaurant itself is uniquely designed with bright colour and lots of butterflies on the ceiling and walls.

Inside the restaurant

The hotel is also home to a basement cocktail bar called Hokus Pokus, which has a cocktail menu with plenty of choices – you can choose cocktails on fire, smoky cocktails or just normal every day ones. The bar itself is again bold in design, being gold (!) and very smoky, but it’s a cool place to spend the evening (unless you have asthma).

The staff at The Megaro were all lovely, with speedy check-in. For a 5* hotel there were a few details which let it down. At the best 5* hotels I’ve been to, there is normally some combination of the following – a welcome drink, help with bags, room features explanation, concierge, spa, speedy lifts, hidden luggage storage. None of that was available here – in fact we had to lug our bags up 6 flights of stairs as the lifts weren’t working, and our bags on check out were just left in reception in full view even when no-one was behind the desk.

Now – of course, I really don’t mind any of those things because I don’t expect to be waited on hand and foot, but if you’re paying a 5* price, I think you should get at least some of them. In the case of this hotel, I think you pay the price for its unique design – and to me, it was a wonderful place for a night or two as it is a LOT of fun and the rooms are amazing – but not for a longer stay as it’s not worth the style over substance money.

So what do you think of The Megaro? Would you like to stay there to enjoy the unique design features and cool cocktail bar? Let me know in the comments below – stay safe and happy travelling.

  1. Pop diva, travel diva…they can go hand-in-hand, haha! But wow, The Megaro looks very cool and retro in design, especially your room…and the views and proximity to Kings Cross Station certainly can’t be beat! It is annoying, though, to have to lug your own bags up six floors: while I understand that elevators break down, at least the concierge should assist with the bags at a five-star hotel like The Megaro. Minor inconveniences aside, it looked like a lovely stay!

    1. Hehe thanks Rebecca – it was definitely a col hotel despite the minor inconveniences, and always good to have a stay in the city 🙂

  2. What a wonderful place to spend a night! I love how the hotel and the room are uniquely decorated with bright colours and bespoke furnishings. You also got to love how the Hotel is located just a stone’s throw away from Kings’ Cross St. Pancras Station and the Eurostar – connecting you straight to the heart of the vibrant capital. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  3. Looks like a great location. Did you bring out your inner Diana Ross? Beyonce? Im wondering what were the other theme options. Maggie

    1. I’m not sure I have an inner Diana Ross or Beyonce to bring out hahahaa! I sound like a strangled cat at the best of times 🙂

  4. Looks like a fun hotel and the cocktail bar looks fab! But I can’t believe you had to lug your bags up six flights of stairs in a five-star hotel, that’s crazy.

    1. The cocktail bar was amazing, but the lift situation definitely wasn’t! Thankfully my husband was there to do the lugging haha 🙂

  6. It looks like a fun and entertaining place to stay. Great location too, with easy access to some lively locations. The breakfast looks delicious but the restaurant looks a little too busy for my tastes. Your room looks nice and spacious though. That’s ridiculous about the broken elevator; they should have helped you with your luggage. All in all, it looks like it was a fun getaway!

    1. It was definitely entertaining and a bit of fun, but the overall verdict was definitely style over substance and customer service! But I always love a trip to London and an excuse for a fun night away 🙂

  7. Your room looks bold, beautiful and very stylish. It definitely hit the Pop Diva vibes! I’m surprised to hear that you had to lug your bags up six flights of stairs though. That’s a bit ridiculous.

    1. It was a bit ridiculous, thankfully the husband was with me to do the lugging. But it was a lot of fun for a couple of nights, and I’m glad to have given it a try 🙂

  8. Haha, nothing wrong with being a travel diva 😊! I don’t think I’ve seen a hotel room like this before – I think the red curtain (?) by the bed might give my husband nightmares, but no one can accuse this hotel of not making use of bold colours. I think the right words here is daring and quirky. Just a question: Hair by Fairy? Is that a hair salon?

    1. That’s true, I think it’s an important part of my identity 🙂 LOL the red curtain is quite a lot wasn’t it!! And yes Hairy by Fairy is a hairdressers and interestingly not a chain either, that’s the only one!

  9. That is a very cool room but carrying the bags up so many flights when you’re paying top dollar is crazy!!

  10. If nothing else I would stay here for a fantastic view out of the window like that. I love the look and feel of this hotel- it’s nothing what you would expect. The bold colors and the off beat mix of style and lights is an immediate uplift 🙂

    1. Absolutely agree the colours and the fun were a lift to the mood, that’s for sure and I did really enjoy the stay 🙂

  12. Pop diva room style seems fun but as you said one would expect a better service/amenities at a 5* hotel

    1. Absolutely Tanja, it was a fun hotel but not perfect.

  13. Stayed there before catching eurostar last month. I think our room was punk rock, with massive speakers as bedside tables and everything was black – including deck chairs! I agree with your comments re the star rating, but the price we paid was less than other 5*s around there, which is fair enough.

  14. I’d never heard of The Megaro Han, great review. It looks rather swanky, I think Sladja and I would consider it the next time we’re in London as my old friend Henry is leaving the city soon which means we no longer have a place to crash. Which is very sad. Your cocktail looks fabulous and I like how your suite is essentially a little home.

  15. Sometimes it’s fun to stay at a place that’s quite different from the usual. I booked the husband in something with a similar theme in Arizona once and while it had tons of visual pizzazz, it was quite expensive for what you actually got. Sometimes I think these hotels think they can charge a lot just for some bold decorations.
