The irony that most of the US population are from immigrant families, yet they hate immigrants is mind boggling. Maggie

Immigrants built the USA and yet there was xenophobia so early on. There was a regular ship line between my hometown and New York at the beginning of 20th ct,since it was Austro-Hungarian port.

However, Ellis Island looks very interesting, and could change that thinking. Excellent post, Hannah.

I haven’t seen the registry room in over 40 years. 4th grade field trip. We climbed Lady L to the crown. Beautiful photos.

I have had a lot of family members who came through Ellis Island looking for a new life in America. My aunt actually found an old journal entry from my great grandmother talking about arriving at Ellis Island as a young girl. I would love to spend hours here going through the different areas.

That’s mindboggling! I would love to visit Ellis Island to learn what you learned (and I have a feeling I would spend hours there too!). I think immigration has and will always be a sensitive topic. That’s why it’s important to have museums like this to help us understand this issue from a broader perspective.

The history was cool and all, but once was probably enough for me.

Ellis Island really shows just how rich and how far we’ve come in building this nation into what it is today, and it’s literally regressing just a century later. Very insightful look into your visit on Ellis Island; I don’t recall having visited the last time I was in NYC, but with everything going on these days, I think it’s all the more important to go and understand how we’ve came to be as a country. Thanks for sharing, Han!
