The Lake District, one of the most beautiful areas of England, is also one of the most popular to visit. Deciding where to stay is a tough choice – there are beautiful B&Bs, great self catering options, holiday cottages and every type of hotel imaginable. Given I knew I wouldn’t be able to go abroad this year (or so I thought at the time…after everything that happened since, I’ve ended up splurging on going abroad too haha!), I decided to treat myself and go for a luxury hotel option in the Lakes. And I’m so glad that I did. If you’re looking for a great luxury option in the area, I couldn’t recommend Linthwaite House more.
Location of Linthwaite House
Linthwaite House is close to Lake Windermere in the southern lakes. It is within easy driving access of all attractions around Windermere, including Bowness, boat tours, Hill Top (Beatrix Potter’s house) and Wray Castle.
You can also access many of the classic Lake District hikes and lakes within a short drive from the hotel, including:
- Old Man Coniston
- Loughrigg Fell
- Helm Cragg
- Helvellyn
- Ullswater
You absolutely will need a car to access the hotel, and to travel about the Lake District. There are local buses but they don’t stop near the hotel. The hotel is also slightly outside of a town. Whilst it does have great dining options, if you want to eat out you will have to drive. The benefit of being out of the very busy town centres is peace, quiet and wonderful, uninterrupted views of Lake Windermere and the English countryside.
Accommodation at Linthwaite House
The accommodation at Linthwaite House is gorgeous. The bed was huge and very comfy, with lovely linen. The bathroom was stocked with Molton Brown goodies, such as body lotion, shampoo and bubble bath. The shower was a good size, and there was also a bath in the bathroom. The mini bar was well stocked, including free water as well as paid for soft drinks and alcohol. There is also an in-room coffee machine and kettle for hot drinks.
However the absolute highlight of the room I was in was its hot tub. Opening the patio doors led to steps to a glorious tub, sheltered from the rain by a canopy. The hot tub was cleaned daily and kept completely spotless; it heated up to 39 degrees and the jets had a number of power settings. The canopy was also set up with lots of fairy lights which made it beautiful in the evening. It was absolutely perfect for a luxury treat after all the days of walking and being busy.
The room was cleaned twice a day, with new bath robes and water stocked daily. The housekeeping staff were wonderful and polite and went out of their way with little touches in the room. Perfect.
Food & Drink at Linthwaite House
Only one thing to say about this. WOW. One of the main selling points of this hotel is its food. The in-house restaurant, Henrock, is one of michelin star chef Simon Rogan’s restaurants. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is absolutely delicious, serving everything from fried eggs on French toast, to a Full English, to yoghurt and fruit.
There is also a bar area and an open terrace which serve bites to eat for lunch and snacks, as well as serving full afternoon tea. The highlight however is an evening meal in Henrock, which is a truly special treat. Serving everything from local lamb to Peking duck, the food is absolutely DELICIOUS.

Amenities & Experiences
Linthwaite House is set in absolutely beautiful grounds. One of the nicest things to do is stroll around them, including to the viewing seat out over Lake Windermere. There is also a nice pond area to walk around and a little woodland area to explore. The hotel also has croquet and giant chess games in the grounds to play.
A number of private experiences are also available. These include romantic Afternoon Tea in the lakeside cabin, local brewery tours, private flower making tours, wine tasting led by a professional sommelier and even picnics whilst on the hotel’s own row boats on their lake.
There are also plenty of food related experiences in the restaurant, including champagne and dinner packages, private sunrise hikes followed by dining, and luxury cabin and hot tub hire, including chocolate fondue in the room and dinner.
We decided not to indulge in any of these amazing offers because we were so busy out and about during the days, but you could easily just stay in the hotel for a week and not leave with everything they offer!
